The History Behind Chalet Vauban

If you’re looking to stay in a property with a difference this summer, you might be interested in a Serre Chevalier chalet with some real history behind it, Chalet Vauban. For those who have not visited Briancon before, it is a beautiful fortified town located in the Hautes Alpes (High Alps) region of France. The town, a UNESCO world heritage site, attracts a steady stream of tourists in summer months and benefits from some of the best, snow-sure slopes in France in the winter season.
The Vauban fortifications catch the eye immediately on the approach to Briancon. The forts tower above Briancon old town with its narrow streets; both are the work of Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban, more commonly referred to simply as Vauban, King Louis XIV’s architect.
Vauban was the foremost military engineer of France, not only during his lifetime, but also throughout the 18th century when his legacy and methods remained in place almost unchanged. He was responsible for the upgrading of fortifications in around 300 cities and directed the building of 37 new fortresses all around the coasts and borders of France. He was also one of King Louis most respected servants, until he fell out of favour with the King just a year before his death in 1706.
Chalet Vauban, as the name suggests is Vauban’s former home, built especially for the Marquis. The spacious property has been beautifully restored to retain its original grandeur.
